NCGV caught ignoring the actual data

Wildekarrde continues his analysis if the CDC data on suicide. We’ve already seen his data showing that suicide in general is fairly uncommon for teens. It’s much more common in adult men, especially as they get older. His latest shows that firearm suicide is less common in teens than in the general public.
Suicide by firearm is less common than suicide by suffocation (hanging) in the 0-19 age group. When looking at all age categories, suicide by firearms comprises 54% of all suicides. So despite the fact that 54% of all North Carolina suicides are by firearm, only 36% of “teen” suicide are by firearm. 46% are by suffocation.
One assumes that North Carolinians against Gun Violence will also be calling for parents to lock up their ropes, belts, bed sheets, electric cords, and neckties since suicide by hanging represents a larger percentage of suicides than by firearms.
Oh, who am I kidding? NCGV isn’t actually interested in suicide or in teens. They are just looking for another annoying way to limit our firearm rights.

Wildekarrde does it again, this time with pictures

There’s too much here to explain. Just go and read it yourself. He has lots of interesting maps that show how suicide and homicide seem to be regional problems.

Wildekarrde brings the smart: Suicide in North Carolina by the numbers

A couple of days ago I wrote a post critical of NCGV and their “Minutes Matter” campaign. Once again, the gun grabbers were trying to use the blood of the dead to push their anti-gun agenda. The very next day I posted an old New York Times graphic that points out how suicide appears to be far more a problem of older men than teens. Blogger “karrde” of the blog “Wildekarrde” has wrangled up the CDC data and has drawn some clear conclusions.
Read the whole thing. Seriously, read it. Arm yourself with the facts so that when another idiot gun grabber tries to pretend that “Safe Storage” laws are a good idea, you can smack them upside the head with the truth.
The sad and sorry truth is that when you are talking about suicide by gun, you are talking about older white men. The gun grabbers don’t care about these men. They are not interested in why they kill themselves. They are not interested in reducing the numbers of suicides in older white men. Just like with crime, they are not interested in the causes and cures of criminal behavior, they are focused on the tool. To them, one more dead old white guy is just another statistic that they can use to pretend that guns are a public health menace. Why would they work to reduce these deaths?
We know why older men commit suicide. They kill themselves after divorce, after long illnesses, or because their poor health has robbed them of the ability to be the men they want to be. If you haven’t called up your dad or grandfather and told him how important he is to you, do it now. Unlike us exhibitionist bloggers, they probably won’t write a post explaining the embarrassment of buying Depends, or the anger they feel about the doctor denying them Viagra because their heart “isn’t healthy enough for sex.”
And if you’re an older guy reading this, put the gun down and buy the damn diapers. You still have useful work to do in this world. Go and find it, even if you have to chase it down the hall with your walker, or your wheelchair, or that damn Hoveround thing. We aren’t done with you yet.

Everything has already been said, some of it needs repeating

I pointed this out last October, but I think that it bears repeating. In light of yesterday’s post on NCGV starting up their “Lock Up Your Guns or Else Your Kid Gets It” campaign, maybe we should examine the actual statistics on gun suicide.

Each of those red bullets represents a suicide. Note where they are concentrated? See the one red bullet in the “17 and under” category and compare it to the mass of red bullets in the “Age 40 and Over” block. Maybe some bright person who can figure WISQARS out can give us the actual numbers of suicide deaths broken down by age category and by method. I bet that it will be enlightening. And by “enlightening,” I mean absolutely devastating to the NCGV argument.
But NCGV doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the white men over 40 who kill themselves. They make a big stink about the vastly fewer number of teens who kill themselves with a gun. It is clear that suicide is not a teen problem. Or at least suicide by gun is not a teen problem. It is a problem mostly for men and mostly for older men. NCGV ignores those deaths. After all, they are using their own guns, not mommy and daddy’s gun. According to NCGV, these dead men are the problem, they keep clinging to their guns.
One gets the impression that they are happy about the dead white males. After all, when you are dancing in blood, it’s especially sweet when it’s the blood of your enemies.

People who kill drug dealers rarely get the death penalty

In a story totally unrelated to the huge increase in Concealed Handgun Permits in North Carolina, murders are down here in the Tarheel State.
This is great news for some lefties, such as those who oppose the death penalty
That’s cool with me. I’m a bit put out that we can only impose the death penalty on people who commit first degree murder, but I’m not going to complain that fewer murders are occurring just because it means fewer people are getting executed for those murders.
Here’s the thing. Who does the murdering, why, and to whom? As we’ve seen over and over, murder is generally the province of career criminals, drugs are involved, and the victims have a disproportionate chance of being criminals themselves. The simple fact is, juries are reluctant to give the death penalty to anyone who is convicted of killing a drug dealer. To the average jury, the death penalty is reserved for particularly heinous murders, like killing kids, killing in a particularly brutal fashion, or killing a lot of people. They are really unlikely to give the death penalty to those who kill other criminals.
I’m a heretic. I think that if you murder someone, you should get put to death. I don’t care if you murdered a little old church lady, or shot down Ice Dog and Ray-Ray over a $5 drug debt. If you are the sort of person who murders others, you should get put to death.

One more thing. How is it that our streets are positively awash in ordinary citizens carrying loaded hidden guns in public and our murder rate is down? Don’t more guns equal more crime?

Huge increase in NC Concealed Handgun Permits

Each year the State Bureau of Investigation releases their Concealed Handgun Permit data. They recently released the info for the year. Unfortunately the SBI doesn’t have previous year data, they just post the updated info on the same web page. Luckily I have referred to the numbers before and I wrote down a few of them.
As of 6-30-2010, the SBI reported 195,553 active permits statewide. The latest data, 6-30-2011, shows a total of 228,072 active CHPs statewide, an increase of 32,519. This is more than a 16.6% increase in Concealed Handgun Permits statewide in only one year. Wake County had 12,826 CHPs, and now has 15,372, or 2,546 more than last year, a staggering 19.85% increase.
North Carolinians against Gun Violence would have you believe that all those new concealed carriers running around with guns would lead to an increase in violence. Somehow I haven’t noticed it.

This is the reality of robbery (*Video*)

It’s just property? Give them what they want? Maybe you don’t know what robbery really looks like.

Tell me that these three didn’t deserve to be killed for acting like that. It’s not just property, it’s the lives of all the victims that is at stake.

More info on the decapitated man in the freezer case (*Video*)

So back in October, Wake County Sheriff’s Deputies found a man’s dead body decapitated and stuffed in a freezer in the basement of a Raleigh home. Now more details of the investigation have been released.
So they had the 13 year old smash dad over the head with a hammer while he was sleeping, and when the first whack didn’t get the job done, they had him give dad another. Then they sat and watched him die. Fun people. But wait, there’s more!
Somehow I’m not surprised. If you have a strong stomach, you can watch the video below (RSS Readers, click this link).

So we have domestic violence initiated and planned by the wife, we have known criminals as both perpetrators and victim, and the entire crime was committed without a gun. So what else are the gun grabbers wrong about?

Remember, according to the Duluth Model, men are the aggressors in domestic violence

Remember our first discussion of the sexist Duluth Model of domestic violence, men are always the perpetrators of domestic violence and women always the victim. So how do you explain this?

I know, one incident does not disprove the theory. But in Merced County, it appears that they are running 50-50
No doubt some will still find a way to blame the men for their own deaths.

NC Concealed Handgun Permits up – Crime is down

Every time we try to remove some of the unwarranted restrictions on where and when we may carry firearms, we are warned that “blood will run in the streets.” It’s Dodge City all over again in every newspaper. Yet what happened here in North Carolina? The last official released number of active CHPs in the State was June 30, 2010, at 195,553 active Concealed Handgun Permits. The last time I got to look at the current number of permits that number had grown to over 224,000. So we should see some serious blood running in the streets, right?
Umm. Wait. Aren’t more guns supposed to lead to more crime? Aren’t more concealed carriers supposed to lead to more shootouts over parking spots?
I don’t think that criminals are turning away from crime solely because people like me carry a gun. There are probably many more factors here than the simple cause and effect. Whatever the criminals are doing, there is one certain thing about this increase in Concealed Handgun Permits. More guns haven’t led to more crime, either violent or otherwise.
