What percentage of the NC population has a Concealed Handgun Permit?

Here’s a good question without a simple answer. What portion of the population of North Carolina has a Concealed Handgun Permit? I ask this question because it seems that in Wisconsin,
That’s pretty impressive. One out of every 100 Wisconsinites, Wisconians, Cheeseheads has applied for a concealed carry license in the last 42 days. That pretty much puts the lie to the concept that it’s just a tiny fringe group that wants to carry a gun.
We’ve had Shall Issue Concealed Handgun Permits here in North Carolina for a little over 16 years. Let’s crunch some numbers
Total North Carolina residents 9,535,483
Total Concealed Handgun Permits 228,072
Percentage of North Carolinians who have a CHP 2.39%
There’s just one problem with that. CHP holders are required to be 21 years old. That total residents number includes everyone, from baby to senior citizen. Unfortunately, the Census only gives us data for people in various age groups, but not “21 and up.”
Total North Carolina residents 18 and up 7,253,848
Total Concealed Handgun Permits 288,072
Percentage of Adults with CHP 3.14%
That’s the best I can do with official numbers. I can, however, try to estimate the total number of North Carolinians 21 years of age or older.
If we take 4/5ths of the 20-24 age group and add it to the older age groups, we get
Total North Carolinians 21 and older 6,844,488
Total Concealed Handgun Permits 288,072
Percentage of eligible NC residents with CHPs 3.33%
This means that in any crowd of 300 people, you can expect that 10 of them are licensed to carry a concealed handgun. That’s a low percentage, but have faith, the total number of Concealed Handgun Permits in North Carolina has increased 16.6% over the last year. If we can sustain that growth, it will only take 5 years to double the number of CHPs statewide. Do your part. If you don’t have a CHP, go get one. If you have one, encourage a couple of friends to get theirs. I went to the CHP class and took 4 people with me. You could do the same.

  1. 3% seems to be the norm. Funny, that…

  2. @Newbius: That’s kind of funny.

Now if we can get HB111 (Restaurant Carry) passed, a lot of people will lose their excuses.

  3. As of April 23rd, I’ll be able to teach the NC CHL class. I’m doing my part to make a dent in that number. 🙂

  4. From what I’ve seen, NC is right on the average. The range for RTC states runs between 2 & 4% of the eligible population.

As for how many people with licenses actually carry regularly, well, I wouldn’t put it all that high, so your estimate of “10 in 300” I would say is accurate as far as having a license goes, but optimistic if you expect them all to be toting.

I wont’ hazard a guess about what the actual percentage of carriers is.

  5. @Kevin: That’s why I worded it the way I did.

I’m probably on the high end of the curve in that I carry whenever I can. That’s the reason I want to get rid of all the barriers to carrying. I’m tired of disarming on the way into a restaurant. That’s really the only place I go that I can’t carry.

I also spend a lot of time talking to people and volunteering with GRNC at gun shows to get more people to carry more often.
